Auburn’s closest King County option is the new South County Recycling & Transfer Station in Algona, which replaced the old Algona Transfer Station in 2026. What South County Won’t Take in the Garbage
South County has recycling, yard-waste and hazardous-waste areas, so most of a mixed load can go in one trip, but you do the sorting yourself at the station. These items can’t go in the garbage at any King County station. Sort them out before you go, or hand the whole mixed pile to us and skip the sorting:

Getting There
Directions & What to Expect
South County sits at 35101 W Valley Hwy S in the small City of Algona, just south of Auburn between the SR-167 and West Valley corridors, about 200 feet north of the old Algona station. Here’s how a self-haul trip actually goes:
Check the hours first
Weekdays run 7am–4:30pm and weekends 8:30am–5:30pm, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Call King County at (206) 477-4466 if you’re not sure. A wasted trip is the most expensive kind.
Secure your load
Tie down and cover everything. King County charges a $25 fee for any load that arrives unsecured — a loose tarp can cost you.
Weigh in, then dump
You’re charged by weight, with a $40.25 minimum through Dec 31 ($43.50 starting Jan 1, 2027). County employees direct you to the tipping floor; you unload your own vehicle by hand.

Where It Goes
We Don’t Just Dump It
South County has recycling bins, but on a self-haul trip the sorting is your job, and anything you don’t separate goes in the garbage. We work differently: reusable furniture and household goods go to charitable partners for a second life, appliances and metal go to recyclers, and e-waste goes to certified electronics recyclers. Because we sort loads right on the truck, only what genuinely can’t be reused or recycled reaches the transfer station.
