The city of Seattle has two options for dumps within the city limits. One is the North Transfer Station and the other is the South Transfer Station. They operate similarly, but it is worthwhile to find out which is nearest to you in order to make your Seattle junk pickup trip as easy as possible.
Dump Locations in Seattle
The North Transfer Station is located at 1350 N 3th St in Seattle. This dump is in the Fremont neighborhood. (See Map Below)
The South Transfer Station is located at 130 South Kenyon Street in Seattle. This is south of the 1st Ave S Bridge and two blocks north of the old location of the transfer station. This dump is near the South Park neighborhood. (See Map Below)
Seattle Dump Hours
The hours for both the North and South transfer stations are the same:
- Monday – Sunday: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- Closed: 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day
Because both these stations are located within the city limits, there can be long waits and lines at both stations. Try to plan your trip during odd times or at times when you can afford to wait if there is a bit of a line or backup. The city advises that the busiest times are Saturday to Monday morning, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings being the least crowded.
Neither facility handles hazardous waste. You should go to the North Household Hazardous Waste Facility or the South Household Hazardous Waste Facility if you have hazardous waste to dispose of.
Seattle Garbage Dump Prices, Fees, and Rules
The fees for both transfer stations are exactly the same. They have not changed since 2010 and break down as follows:
Type of Material | Flat Rate (for sedans, station wagons and sport utility vehicles) | Per Ton Rate (for trucks, vans, vehicles with trailers, buses, commercial vehicles and all other vehicles) |
Regular garbage | $30 for each trip | $145 per ton with a minimum of $30 to cover up to 420 pounds |
Wood | $20 for each trip | $110 per ton with a minimum of $20 |
Yard waste | $20 for each trip | $110 per ton with a minimum of $20 to cover up to 380 pounds |
Large appliances like refrigerators | $30 per appliance (with a limit of 2 per load) | $8 per appliance, plus the cost of tonnage for other materials |
Tires | $13 per load (with a limit of 4 per load) | $13 per load (with a limit of 4 per load) |
Sharps | No charge (with a limit of one gallon per trip) | N/A. The dumps only accept household sharps |
Recyclables | No charge | No charge |
Note that there is a fine for unsecured loads, in accordance with city ordinances. Not only with the dumps charge fees for unsecured loads, but if anything falls off your vehicle on the highway you can be charged even steeper fines.
What Can You Dump at Seattle City Dump?
The dumps can handle most items, but there are some considerations to keep in mind. Recyclables should get separated out for proper sorting. And the facilities can not handle hazardous materials, which need to be taken to a separate specialized facility. Things like computers, light bulbs with mercury in them (and other items with mercury in them) and appliances containing hazardous materials may also require special disposal techniques and handling.
